Key elements of our program in Cameroon are four-day conferences for clergy and community leaders. Focused on education, the intense conferences provide training and practical approaches to attacking the ignorance, stigma, and discrimination surrounding HIV/AIDS and are the major culprits in the spread of the disease throughout Africa. CAAA invites pastors, health care workers and other community leaders to be conference delegates. As a result, the people who serve on the epidemic’s front lines receive the latest information about HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment. Most importantly, they build skills that help them counsel and influence those infected with, and affected by the disease. Participants return to their communities inspired and empowered with knowledge. They also come away knowing they are not fighting the battle alone—they have Cameroon and American partners who stand and walk with them. Community leaders have enthusiastically embraced the CAAA conferences and demand has outpaced our capacity for future training. To date, 420 pastors and community leaders have been trained at CAAA conferences. With the help of donors and volunteers, four additional conferences will take place in 2008 and 2009. -- “So truly, truly HIV/AIDS does exist!” -- “This HIV conference is very timely. I feel that we have been well equipped and ready to go back into our communities and starting talking openly about HIV/ADIS that is killing our people, yet we have been silent.”
